Akumal

One of the most beautiful and quiet places on the Riviera Maya is located north of Tulum. Only 105 kilometers from Cancun and 20 minutes away from Playa del Carmen,  the small community of Akumal is the preferred vacation spot for those looking for peace and quiet away from big cities.

Akumal is a Mayan word meaning “land of the turtle” for these wonderful marine animals that come here every summer to lay their eggs.

This marvelous place has a spectacular half-moon bay filled with clear, quiet water protected by a nearby coral reef teaming with several sea creatures like rays, eels and hundreds of fish. Akumal has about 200 entry points to caves and fresh water underground rivers- some up to 500 feet underground- that are a paradise for divers from all over the world. They are also perfect for kayaking, snorkeling and other water sports.

Akumal was the first tourism development on the Riviera Maya and today is still a quiet, picturesque Mediterranean-style community with a happy, relaxed bohemian air.  Akumal offers excellent restaurants, together with an ecological park, and the Yalku lagoon.
