How low is the cost of living in Mexico?

Wednesday, September 4th, 2013

Crystal clear waters, miles of white thin sand, and year round warm temperatures, it’s hard to believe that the cost of living in the Riviera Maya is so affordable. It is said that living in the Riviera Maya, Mexico is around 40% less than in the U.S, Canada and Europe.

The Riviera Maya is a stretch of white sandy coastline, roughly 200 km long, from north of Cancun to Tulum. Cancun, located at the most northern point, is the entry point to most of the Riviera Maya, with the second most transited airport in Mexico. Playa del Carmen is the halfway point, roughly 60km south of Cancun, once a tiny fishing village it evolved into a hippie-modern town and today is a sophisticated small town combining this hippie-modern style with luxury trendy lifestyle. Tulum is the most rustic yet hippie-chic of the three. With bikini-clad women riding their bicycles, top models and movie stars taking a break along the eco-friendly beaches. Although the Riviera Maya is mostly known for these three destinations, there are many more tiny towns and beaches that line the Riviera Maya.

How is then, that living on this pristine stretch of the Caribbean ocean is so cheap? First we need to consider that the Mexican economy wasn’t all that affected by the recession that most countries are going through, with its steady stream of tourism and recent recognition as one of the best countries to invest in, the economy has been very stable. As far as renting or buying a place to live, it is still considered more affordable than in the U.S., you might want to look into a Playa del Carmen condo a few blocks away from the beach if you are on a tight budget, walking a couple of blocks surrounded by a tropical ocean breeze while everyone greets you is not a bad way to start your day. Utilities such as water and gas tend to be a stable monthly bill of about $10USD, where electricity can vary month to month, and this might be your only expensive bill. Local markets are filled with local organic fruits and veggies, both healthy and cheap, and if on the off chance you can’t find what you’re looking for, the big chain supermarkets will have if for a few more pesos.

Health care is also very cheap in Mexico, a doctors appointment at a private clinic costs around $45USD, since most Mexicans do not have medical insurance, doctors are more considerate when it comes to costs. The hospitals are very modern and up to date, and most if not all of the staff are bi-lingual and very prepared.

The following website provides accurate comparisons between the U.S and Mexico, showing the costs of transportation, rent, utilities, etc.

So if you are thinking of moving to a seaside quaint, Caribbean town, the Riviera Maya is an amazing and very affordable option!

Is Mexico Safe?

Friday, August 16th, 2013

“Why do you live in Mexico?” this is usually the first question I get from U.S. immigration officers upon entering the United States. Being a dual citizen, Mexican and American, I have the luxury of living in either country, and I am proud to call Mexico my home. “Sir, I live in the Mexican Caribbean, every morning I wake up to clear blue skies shining through my window and with the Caribbean ocean a mere steps from my back door. The question should really be, why wouldn’t I live in Mexico?”

Mexico spans over 2,000 miles, it’s a big country, in fact it’s ranked 14th in the world. Out of the 31 states that make up Mexico, only 6 states that mostly border the U.S., is where the main violence is located. Not coming to the Riviera Maya because of the violence in the state of Sonora, is like not going to Chicago, because of the Colorado shootings. I understand the negative light that has been shed on the violence in Mexico, especially since there is a so-called war on drugs. However, what the media fails to report is that the violence is only associated with the drug trade, in fact Mexico is safer when it comes to assault, kidnapping and rape, than the U.S. This means that unless you come to Mexico in hopes of joining a drug cartel, which for many obvious reasons I wouldn’t recommend, you are statistically safer in Mexico than in the U.S. http://howsafeismexico.com/global_crime_rates.html Quintana Roo, where the Riviera Maya is located, officially became a state in 1974, before then it was considered a federal territory. The state was founded with the idea of bringing more tourism to the country. Today, according to the Sedetur website, the state of Quintana Roo brings in just under half of all of Mexico’s tourist dollars, last year saw a total of $4.3 billion.

White sandy beaches, crystal clear waters and an assortment of water and land activities, the Riviera Maya is already a top destination, with many articles already being written about the spectacular destinations this area has to offer. http://www.travelandleisure.com/articles/the-stylish-beaches-of-tulum-mexico

So the question really is, why wouldn’t you come visit? I assure you that between the amazing beaches and impeccable service the only danger that exists is that you may never want to leave!

Riviera Maya: Family Travel

Monday, April 8th, 2013

Mexico is well known for considering children the center of attention, we love their laughter and are in a mission to accomplish this, of course it is not hard with the largest sand bank and natural playground in all of Mexico

The Mesoamerican reef protects our shores making our beaches as calm as swimming pools, lots of “cenotes” natural sinkholes offer their adventurous and fearless imagination a real life movie experience, zip lines, sky cycles, the most colorful variety of fish, boats, canoes and hammocks, even an avatar ride a fast roller coaster type zip line unique to this area.

Staying at a nice house or condominium gives your family the opportunity to explore the culture and add to your memory collection incredible mind prints, with a turquoise blue background, and the most enjoyable sounds of laughter, all possible and easy to achieve here.

If you are travelling with a baby, Playa del Carmen has 5 major supermarkets carrying everything from your favorite brand of diapers, to the baby food brand you are used to, it is advised to use only bottled water but you should not be scared of health issues, we host over 3 million visitors a year with the most sensitive stomachs, and children are some of our favorite repeat guests.
